Figure in the urban landscape.

igure in the Urban Landscape (2007–2008) continues my exploration of the familiar urban landscape, shifting the focus from architecture to the people who inhabit and move through the city. The works depict vernacular scenes drawn from everyday experience — people travelling, shopping, having lunch, meeting friends or simply waiting.

The characters perform the mundane rituals of urban life, often absorbed in their own journeys and routines. Rather than treating the figure and landscape as separate subjects, the work considers the relationship between them: not only does the landscape define us, we also play an important role in defining the landscape we inhabit.

Created through multiple-plate colour etching, the works use softground, hardground and aquatint to explore colour, line, atmosphere and the shifting relationship between the figure and the built environment.
