Figure in the urban landscape, solo show at Robin Gibson Gallery 2008
These etchings and paintings were created between 2007 and 2008. The work explores the figure in the urban landscape depicting vernacular scenes from my everyday life. The characters perform mundane rituals of urban life, in transit, having lunch or simply waiting. Not only does the landscape define us, we also play and important role in defining the landscape that we inhabit.
Tina Barahanos
About
Tina Barahanos is a Sydney-based multidisciplinary artist working across printmaking, painting, drawing, photography, digital media and collaborative public art.
Her practice has a strong foundation in printmaking and drawing, with the material and process-based qualities of different media informing how the work develops. Printmaking allows her to work through layering, repetition and recombination; painting through building, revising and obscuring an image; and photography and digital media through capturing, altering and bringing images together.
Across recent work, landscape has become a recurring subject and a way of considering how place is experienced and understood. Barahanos draws on landscapes encountered through travel and everyday movement, exploring how what is seen in the present can become entangled with places previously encountered, remembered or imagined. Rather than treating landscape as a fixed or singular view, her work considers how familiarity, memory and accumulated experience continually alter perception.
Her collaborative public art practice extends her work into architectural and public spaces, working across different materials and scales and responding to the particular context and relationships to place that shape each site.
Barahanos holds a Master of Fine Art from UNSW College of Fine Arts and was awarded the Wyndham Art Prize in 2017. Her work has been selected for exhibitions and awards including Sydney Contemporary, the Fremantle Arts Centre Print Award, Head On Photo Award and Rick Amor Drawing Prize, and she has exhibited at institutions including Manly Art Gallery and Museum, Megalo Print Studio, Hawkesbury Regional Gallery and Blacktown Arts Centre.
Her work is held in collections including Geelong Gallery, Manly Art Gallery and Museum, State Library of NSW, Blacktown City Council, UNSW Art and Design and Alfred University School of Art, New York, as well as national and international private collections.
